Nation of Great

This ink and acrylic on antique ledger paper, signed Merle Locke OLA and dated 2016, is a beautiful and charming example of traditional Native American ledger art. Approximately 14.5"x6".

Prints: The original piece has been sold. This painting is available in a limited-edition giclee print on archival fine art paper. Unframed. Framing is available.

Locke uses ledger paper #385 dated January 1899 from a Black Hills grocery store in Oelrichs or Keystone, SD as a reminder of that terrible time in Native American history.

Since that time, Native artists have used ledger paper when nothing else was available for their art, making it a tradition. Locke's art honors the memories of his ancestors in part out of necessity, as art supplies still do not come easily on the Reservation.

A couple in simple dress stand resolutely near their tipi. Four circling dragonflies highlight this piece.

Buy more than one! These little treasures look even more beautiful when grouped together!

Merle is one of the most recognized Oglala Lakota artists working today! Watch a video of Merle discussing his art.
