#340 ~ Horse and Rider

The original ink and acrylic on antique ledger paper, signed Merle Locke OLA and dated 2016, is a fantastic example of traditional Native American ledger art. Approximately 14.5"x6".
Locke honors the memory of his ancestors by using ledger paper dated December 1898 from a Black Hills grocery store as a reminder of that terrible time in Native American history. Native artists have continued to use ledger paper, making it part of the tradition.
In this example from his iconic Horse and Rider series, Locke depicts a beautifully dressed rider with the spirit of the buffalo on a masterfully executed white and brown painted horse.

Condition of the Original: No defects or scratches to the art, however normal signs of wear and age on the antique ledger paper are considered part of the piece. In addition, there is a tear on the top of this sheet (above the sun), repaired with tape on the back, which should be barely visible once the piece is framed. There is also a small piece torn away from the left side of the sheet. These larger defects are photoshopped for the print.
