Carved Cottonwood Old Man Yellow Horse
Cottonwood Carving (Chan Kasku) by Leonard Yellow Horse
Old Man Yellow HorseThis imposing figure is a fabulous piece from Leonard Yellow Horse! They way he has carved the buffalo robe is super cool. The lined face is magnificent and truly seems natural to the wood. The hair and braids, shield, four separately-carved and affixed feathers plus four highly-detailed flat feathers, breastplate, even the moccasin peeping out all magically emerge from the wood. But that's not all! This protector even has a rifle half-concealed under his robe! The way he uses the contours and grain of the wood is truly amazing and artful. Leonard says the story of Old Man Yellow Horse is one of protecting and feeding his people and instructing them in Lakota Ways.
The contour and unique characteristics of each piece of wood dictate the form. Mr Yellow Horse tells us these people already reside in the wood and he simply finds them and brings them out. The cottonwood is sourced from dry riverbeds on the Pine Ridge Reservation. The bottom is signed and dated 2016 with the artist's distinctive signature. Hand carved with details added using a torch tool. 15" tall including feathers.
Signed, original, unique Oglala Lakota Sioux Native American cottonwood carving.
